Living Paintings | Beyond Caravaggio | National Gallery

I'm Gabriele Finaldi, I'm the Director ofthe Gallery, and I'm standing in Trafalgar Square.

It's a fine Friday evening at the endof October, and we're standing in the square, because we're going to see a performanceby an Italian theatrical troupe called Quadri Plastici, who are reproducing two paintings by Caravaggiowhich are in our 'Beyond Caravaggio' exhibition.

Now Caravaggio painted these pictureswhich are life-size, very dramatically lit, they lend themselves to recreation.

This is street art, we can say,but it's another form of art.

To represent paintings is not easy, butthe result is amazing.

And put together, music, light, and actorsare an emotional way to express art.
